【Course Objectives】

Students will develop their knowledge about art using English. Using art-related vocabulary and concepts, students will learn how to explain and critically analyse different aspects of art and art history. Students will also be able to recognise and discuss the influences of different art periods and styles between different cultures around the world. Students will use all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) to learn and talk about art in English. Listening skills will be developed through lectures and videos. Speaking skills will be developed through weekly discussions and two presentations (midterm and final). Reading skills will be developed through weekly short articles. Finally, writing skills will be developed through weekly note taking and summaries, along with two written reports (midterm and final).

【Course Contents】

This CLIL Art course is designed to give students an overview and understanding of Western art and its history. Each week will focus on important or influential periods of art (e.g., Classical, Renaissance, Impressionism, Modern), different types of art (e.g., painting, sculpture, architecture, digital art), and different aspects of art (e.g., shading, foreshortening, composition, perspective). Well-known works of art will be examined and discussed, along with how they are connected to and influence other works during the same time period or further along the timeline. Each lesson will have multiple group discussions, a short lecture, videos, and a short reading homework. Occasionally, specific skills required to do certain activities (e.g., note taking skills, presentation preparation skills) will be reviewed.
