The objective of the course is to introduce students to the spatial and cultural phenomena that influence tourism, with a focus on the main critical paradigms and trends of tourism studies within Europe. We will look into the role of tourism in shaping urban and rural development at the regional, national and international scale, and analyse the evolution and organization of tourism in space, understanding the policies and strategies promoted in Europe. It presents a combination of theory and case studies that develop theories on heritage and memory, especially dissonant heritage, dark tourism, biopolitics and tourism, climate change and tourism, sustainability and its critiques.
The course offers an introduction to critical tourism studies in Europe. During the course, the students will be introduced to the main concepts and theories present in critical tourism studies (a critique to sustainability and development, decoloniality, emotional geographies and tourism, climate change and tourism, biopolitics and tourism, dark tourism, and so on). After a general overview, the students will be introduced to a variety of case studies from Italy and other European countries, which function as points of connection between theory and practice.
