【Course Objectives】

By learning about the change of travel form through the eras and the fictional travelogues written by the imagination based on contemporary factors, we will analyse the desire underlying these travels and travelogues.

【Course Contents】

Travel has a long history. But travel for the enjoyment of travel itself, such as excursions and tourism, as we do today, is a new form of travel flourished since the 18th century. In the first part of the course we will trace the history of modern travel. The second part of the course is aimed to analyze the fictional travelogues written in many centuries. The form of the travelogue provides literature with a framework for telling fictional stories. By reading fictional travelogues and finding the subject matter of each work, we will elucidate the specific worldview in their eras. If time permits, we will also hold an atelier d'écriture (writing workshop) for writing own travelogues or fictional travelogues, referring to works covered in course.
