【Course Contents】

During the early modern period, when the feudal military government the Edo shogunate was established, the political and economic environment in Japan stabilized.Although the shogunate did not permit people to move freely, except for trade and official business, the treatment of illnesses (such as hot spring cures) and religious purposes (such as visits to temples or shrines) were recognized as valid reasons to travel. As a consequence, traveling for these reasons gained popularity and gave rise to the development of more temples, shrines, and hot spring resorts. This phenomenon shaped the nature of travel in Japan. The purpose of this class is to examine the social roles and characteristics of travel based on the acquisition of basic knowledge regarding travel in the early modern period and to learn about the travel culture and exchanges that were nurtured as a result.
