【Course Objectives】

Students will learn methods for analyzing dance and performance. The aim of the class is to achieve an understanding, not only of the aesthetics of performances, but also their history and social and political context, to enable students to think and discuss dance and performance from their own individual perspective.

【Course Contents】

This class deals with performing arts, with a particular focus on dance (including theater, performance, and representations featuring the body). The class involves two main activities: 1) reading texts related to dance studies and theater and performance studies (Students will present a text topic in their area of personal interest and will lead the class in discussion); 2) students each researching a topic of interest and making a presentation.
Spring semester will focus on reading texts written in Japanese and analysis of videos or literature related to past dance pieces.
