【Course Objectives】

In this course we aim to deepen our understanding of human psychology by thinking about religion: what it is, why it exists, why humans need it, etc. The main objective of the course is to enable students to acquire basic knowledge on psychology of religion and basic understanding of scholarly thinking and methodology. Another goal is to try to have students develop the ability and habit of thinking about issues pertaining to religion from different points of view.

【Course Contents】

In this course we will take up the history of the psychology of religion and discuss various issues relating to human psyche and religion. Concretely, we shall examine the thinking on religion of W. James, S. Freud, C.G. Jung, E. Eriksson and others. and analyze how these psychologists have viewed the functioning and the reasons behind the existence of religious beliefs, as well as the relationship between religion on one side, and meaning, personality and identity on the other.
