In this course we aim to deepen our understanding of human psychology by thinking about religion: what it is, why it exists, why humans need it, etc. The main objective of the course is to enable students to acquire basic knowledge on psychology of religion and basic understanding of scholarly thinking and methodology. Another goal is to try to have students develop the ability and habit of thinking about issues pertaining to religion from different points of view.
In this course we will take up the history of the psychology of religion and discuss various issues relating to human psyche and religion. Concretely, we shall examine the thinking on religion of W. James, S. Freud, C.G. Jung, E. Eriksson and others. and analyze how these psychologists have viewed the functioning and the reasons behind the existence of religious beliefs, as well as the relationship between religion on one side, and meaning, personality and identity on the other.

本コースでは、宗教とは何か、宗教は何故存在し、人間には何故必要なのかという問題を追究し、人間の心に関する理解を深めることを目標とする。また、宗教心理学の基礎知識、学問的な考え方や方法の基本的理解、そして宗教関連の諸問題を様々な視点から考える能力を身につけることも本コースの重要な達成目標である。

宗教心理学の歴史と宗教と心に関する諸問題を取り上げる。ジェームズ、フロイト、ユング、ランク、フロム、エリクソンなどの宗教論を紹介し、心理学者が宗教の成立・特徴・存在の理由などをどう捉え、宗教と意味・人格・アイデンティティなどの関係をどう見ているかを分析する。
