【Course Objectives】

(1) To learn the concepts and knowledges for considerations of the issues of "housing poor (housing insecurity)".
(2) To be able to discuss on housing isssues in basic social science based on the empirical data.
(3) To understanding the relative position of housing problem and housing policies in Japan from international, historical and comparative perspectives.

【Course Contents】

Housing is one of the most essential needs for people. The policies for affordable housing is the foundation for protecting the living standards and welfare of all people and enabling our society livable and sustainable.
In this lecture, we will learn the perspectives for enabling discuss the housing problem and housing policies in Japan, through dealing with two major themes. First, I will focus on some housing problems in comtemporary Japan, with a particular focus on "housig poor (housing insecurity)". By using this issues as a starting point, we aim to understand the characteristics of the "social category" that shape housing policies and the underlying modes of perception of housing problems in our society, and to learn the literacy to use and critique it adequately. Secoundly, through the comparative perspectives, we will study the relative position of housing policies in post-war Japan, to understand how the system of housing policies and its characteristics in Japan have been formed in relations to social structure and social change, perticularly the (trans)formation of welfare state.
