【Course Objectives】

Students in this course will improve their reading comprehension skills through conducting an intensive reading of an American literary work and build their interpretation with a conscious understanding of the work's background, historical period, and literary contexts.

【Course Contents】

In this seminar, we will read Herman Melville's Moby-Dick (1851). It is a well-known masterpiece of American literature, but not many readers have read it in its entirety due to its difficulty and length. Through the reading of this novel, we will discuss a variety of issues the work addresses, such as individualism and American democracy. As this masterpiece is open to every possibility of interpretation, students are encouraged to bring their own unique perspectives into their reading of this novel.
As this course will also share materials to aid in reading comprehension, I encourage students who have never read Moby-Dick but are interested in reading it to take this class.
