【Course Objectives】

By reading American literary works, we will not only experience the aesthetic feeling they provide but also explore the historical and cultural aspects of race, gender, and sexuality. In doing so, we will cultivate self-expression skills in both Japanese and English.

【Course Contents】

In the present period when attention is focused on the concept of intersectionality in literary studies, the issues of race and sexuality, in particular, must be understood interactively in the dynamics of oppression and resistance. In this course, we will examine Another Country by James Baldwin, a writer who confronts the dual identity of being a sexual minority and an African American. Through this exploration, we will contemplate the various aspects of sexuality and race that disrupt the norms of the time.
Please note that the English presentation by the designated presenter will be followed by a Q&A session in English during the first half and in Japanese during the second half of the class. Therefore, it is expected that students will proactively speak up in class.
