【Course Objectives】

The "Roppyakuban Utaawase" is a poetry contest organized by Fujiwara Yoshitsune, in which Teika, Ietaka, Jien and 12 other poets participated. In this seminar, we will deepen our understanding of waka literature through a close reading of this poetry contest.
In this seminar, students will deepen their understanding of waka literature and acquire specialized research methods.

【Course Contents】

There are many things to be seen in "Roppyakuban Utaawase", such as the unique setting of poetry titles, the differences in poetic styles between the old and new schools, heated discussions, and the high quality of the poems written by Toshinari Fujiwara. There are many points to be seen in this poetry contest, such as the intention of expression, the technique of composing poetry titles, and the method of criticizing waka poems.
In this exercise, we will take up the fall and the winter sections, and after explaining the outline of the works and the method of presentation at the beginning, the lecturers will make presentations and hold discussions.
