Through reading and discussion of haiku and its critics written in Japanese, students will deepen their understanding of language expression and explore their own issues.
In order to explore the historical development and structure of language in haiku, this class will take as its case study the haiku poet Takaya Soshu (1910-1999). In particular, we will consider the poetic characteristics and rhetoric of the poem, focusing on the artistic environment around 1930.

日本語で書かれた俳句や俳論の読解とディスカッションを通じて、言語表現についての理解を深め、各自の課題を探求する。
Through reading and discussion of haiku and its critics written in Japanese, students will deepen their understanding of language expression and explore their own issues.
俳句における言葉の歴史的展開と構造を探究するために、この授業では、高屋窓秋（１９１０−１９９９）という俳人を事例としてとりあげる。とりわけ、1930年前後の芸術環境に注目しながら、俳句における詩的特性やレトリックについて考えてゆく予定。
