【Course Objectives】

Students will consider theories and current states of SMEs and Monozukuri corporations in Japanese economy. Students will understand systematically foundation of industrial competitive edge and be able to extract its political significance. These subjects include globalized economic structure, system of division of labor, R&D, intellectual collaboration, and market creation.

【Course Contents】

Since long ago, many people have been questioning international competitiveness of Japanese industries. Nationwide corporations and businesses are decreasing. Some sectors and regions sustain their employment by increasing their added value or forming network with foreign countries. Students will study Japanese Monozukuri: Changing Competitive Edge (Nikkei Publishing) by Tetsuo Minato. Students will read each chapter and analyze foundation of competitive edge Japanese Monozukuri industry .
Students will read not only each chapter, but also reference literatures and several related papers shown. Each time, students will submit summary report and participate in discussion. Many people sought Japanese corporation competitive edge in Monozukuri thinking and method. Here, students will see shifting competition factor from more efficient labor division to R&D product innovation. Students will discuss these theories from multiple perspectives and angles. In addition to political issues, students will consider existential foundation of SMEs, Business Vuntures and their roles.
