The goal of this course is to familiarize students with theoretical and empirical works on local governments and the roles they play in providing public services. In addition, students are expected to be able to critically evaluate social scientific research.
Local government provides a wide range of public services today. We examine local government from various perspectives by covering topics such as decentralization, democratic accountability, size of local governments, and impact of broader structural changes. We also examine local government in Japan in order to relate theories and findings in the academic literature with local governments in the real world context.
