【Course Objectives】

Gravitational lensing is the deflection of light ray path predicted by general relativity, which has become an essential tool in cosmology. The goal of this course is to understand the basics of gravitational lensing and learn its applications.

【Course Contents】

First, the lens equation is derived based on general relativity. The connection with Fermat principle is discussed. The basic properties of gravitational lensing including multiple images, magnification, time delays, are then discussed, followed by discussions on some examples of the lens equation and its solution. Next some cosmological applications of various types of gravitational lensing including strong gravitational lensing and microlensing are discussed. The principle of the cosmological applications including cosmic expansion history and properties of dark matter is introduced.
