Christian books from the Middle Ages were all manuscripts, transcribed by human hand. Particularly, in order to accentuate the Bible, which contains the Word of God, they were often adorned with gorgeous decorations and illustrations. In this course, students will learn the appeal of Middle Age art through the study of various representative illustrations found in Bible manuscripts from the time period.
Middle Age manuscripts, being handheld and easily transported, were carried to many different regions, where they were influenced by various cultures, developing into a very unique form of art. In this seminar, we will focus on one manuscript at a time, discussing its history and artistic expression. Students will learn how the three components of text, patterns, and images accentuate the story of the Bible, as well as how they stimulated people’s understanding of the same. We will also discuss the social background in order to better understand the relevant context. It should be noted that the manuscripts being dealt with may have small changes from copy to copy.

西洋中世キリスト教世界でつくられた書物は、すべて人の手によって書写された写本である。なかでも聖書は神の言葉を輝かせるために、時に豪華な装飾と挿絵がほどこされていた。この授業では、当時の代表的な聖書写本の挿絵を中心に中世美術の魅力を学ぶ。。さらに授業で得た学問的興味を、自発的に深化させる技術、研究態度を身につける。

中世写本はその携帯の容易さから各地へと運ばれ、さまざまな影響を受けながらユニークな装飾芸術を発展させた。授業では、一回ごとに一つの写本に注目し、その来歴、芸術表現について解説を行い、文字、文様、挿絵の3つの要素が聖書の物語をどのように輝かせ、人々の理解を促したのかを当時の社会背景も含めて学ぶ。また、本学図書館所蔵の中世写本ファクシミリを実際に鑑賞する機会を設けて、モノとしての写本理解を深める。なお、とりあげる写本については一部変更の可能性もある。
