【Course Objectives】

While conducting a thorough close reading of American literary works, students will deepen their understanding of the historical and cultural contexts behind the works. Finally, students will write a final essay publishable in an academic journal.

【Course Contents】

In this seminar, we will read Herman Melville's Moby-Dick (1851). It is a well-known masterpiece of American literature, but not many readers have read it in its entirety due to its difficulty and length. We will discuss a variety of issues the work addresses, such as individualism and American democracy. As this masterpiece is open to every possibility of reading and interpretation, students are encouraged to bring their own perspectives into their reading of this novel.
