By conducting actual fieldwork on the lifestyles, societies, and cultures of people rooted in communities, and by collecting and empirically elucidating data, students will learn theories and methods of regional studies and cultural environment studies.
Based on prior learning in classes, the course will schedule a one-day program during the summer vacation period or spring semester to search for regional topics, with Yokosuka (tentative), Kanagawa Prefecture, as the field site. The course will conduct a preliminary survey based on participants' interests and will prepare for the main survey to be conducted in Okinawa during the fall semester.

地域に根ざした人々の生活、社会、文化について実際にフィールドワークを行い、データを収集して実証的に解明し、その成果を報告書にまとめることで、実証的論文執筆の方法を習得する。
今年度は日米関係史をひとつの軸として学びながら、秋学期に沖縄でのフィールドワークを実施する。

春学期は、日米関係史、沖縄・琉球史、沖縄社会論などの文献を購読して、各自の調査テーマを定める。授業での事前学習を踏まえ、春学期中もしくは夏季休業中に神奈川県横須賀（予定）をフィールドにして、予備調査を実施し、秋学期中に実施する本調査のための準備を進める。

文献の収集、読解、報告準備や、報告書の作成に相応の時間を要する。
また、予備調査の調査結果（フィールドノート）を整理したり、入手した資料や統計を分析したりして、各自が本調査に向けた準備を行うこと。

地域社会調査演習 A（春学期）の受講者は、続けて地域社会調査演習 B（秋学期）を受講し、同じ調査地での本調査を実施して報告書をまとめることが強く推奨される。この科目は「その他登録」で、最初の授業時に登録申請をする必要があるので、履修希望者はかならず出席すること。ここで履修申し込みをすると、秋も自動的に履修登録される。
フィールドワークを実施することを考慮し、履修希望者が多数の場合は選考することもある。
授業の目標およびすべての評価方法において、前期課程よりも高度な達成水準を要求する。
