【Course Objectives】

(1) To understand the continuity of poetics in Kobunjigaku and Kokugaku.
(2) To examine the connection between poetics in Kobunjigaku and Kokugaku and their thought.
(3) Learn how to discuss the pre-modern Japanese literature through studies in English-speaking countries

【Course Contents】

We will translate and read the following English-language research book that discusses the relationship between Kobunjigaku and Kokugaku.

Peter Flueckiger. 2010. Imagining Harmony: Poetry, Empathy, and Community in Mid-Tokugawa Confucianism and Nativism. Stanford University Press.

In the mid-Edo period, Kobunjigaku and Kokugaku, which aimed to investigate ancient human emotions and the nature of society, placed the greatest emphasis on poetry and song. They not only explored and developed ideal methods of poetry production, but also discussed the methodology for accessing ancient society, which was at the root of their ideology, in terms of poetry.

In this course, we will translate the above book and discuss with participants how the poetic theory of Kobunjigaku and Kokugaku is linked to their thought.
