【Course Objectives】

To understand the basics and applications of lasers.

【Course Contents】

Laser engineering is a discipline based on electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, optics, etc., and was greatly developed in the latter half of the 20th century, leading to the birth of the term "quantum electronics. Recently, ultra-compact lasers, such as semiconductor lasers, have made their way into music and video players. Recent advances in laser technology have been tremendous, from the field of ultrafast lasers approaching attoseconds to high-energy fast-ignition inertial fusion and ultrahigh-energy lasers approaching laboratory astrophysics. However, the basic concepts of laser operation are common to all of them and can be understood by using conventional electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. In this lecture, we will explain how this science has been developed, and will provide students with an understanding of the basic theory of lasers and their applications.
