【Course Objectives】

The course examines various issues related to performance documentation and preservation.

【Course Contents】

It is often said that performance (referring to both the performing arts and performance art) is inherently immaterial and ephemeral, and that written, photographic, or video documentation can only be partial and incomplete. However, there have been various attempts to record and preserve performance, and they cannot all be dismissed as incomplete. Even if we were to concede that recording and preserving performance is ultimately impossible, it is still necessary to examine this impossibility more closely.
In this course, we will explore the above issues in depth through readings from related literature and presentations based on each student's research interests. Readings will be primarily in English.
