The issue of urban growth and decline has attracted a great deal of attention from various quarters over the centuries. The common sense about the mechanism has also changed over time.
For those who live their lives in cities, for those on the "government" side such as local governments, and for those in academia who wish to find some kind of logic, the question of what cities will be like in the future and what they should be like is an eternal question.
In Urban Management 1, students will study the academic logic of the mechanisms of urban growth and decline, with the aim of acquiring a perspective on the past, present, and future of cities.
Since Urban Management 1 and 2 are independent, it is possible to take only one of them.The class will first provide an overview of how urban development has transformed over the past half century, and then learn about the urban development interests and points of view of the era in which the terms were advocated for each of several "key words" that should be kept in mind.
The first keyword is "diversity" and the second is "creativity.
Diversity" refers to the importance of urban diversity that most people were not aware of, as advocated by Jayne Jacobs, and "creativity" refers to the concept of the creative class, which was proposed by Richard Florida as a new keyword for urban growth, and whose empirical analysis has had a major impact on urban development worldwide. It has had a major impact on urban development around the world through its empirical analysis. In class, the three texts will be read in rotation, and after the presentations by the presenters, the contents will be discussed by all participants.

都市の成長、衰退という問題は多世紀にわたり多くの関心が各方面から寄せられてきた。そして、そのメカニズムに対しての常識も時代とともに変化してきた。
それを舞台として人生を営む人々にとっても、地方自治体などの「官」の側にとっても、また何らかの論理性を見出したいアカデミアに属するものにとっても、これからの都市はどうなっていくのか、どうあるべきか、は永遠の問いである。
都市マネジメント１では、都市の成長、衰退のメカニズムについてのアカデミックな論理を学習し、過去から現在、そして未来の都市のあり方についての視座の獲得を目的とする。

都市マネジメント１と２は独立しているので、一方のみを履修することも可能である。
授業では、まず最初に都市づくりがこの半世紀の間にどう変容してきたかの概略を理解し、次に、押さえておくべきいくつかの「キーワード」ごとにその用語が唱えられてきた時代の都市づくりの関心とポイントについて学習する。
キーワードの１つ目は「多様性」であり、２つ目は「創造性」である。
「多様性」はジェイン・ジェイコブスの唱えた、ほとんどの人が気が付いていなかった都市の多様性の重要性のことである。２つ目の「創造性」はクリエイティブクラスという、リチャード・フロリダが新しい都市成長のキーワードとして提唱した概念であり、その実証分析により世界の都市づくりに大きな影響を与えた。授業では３冊のテキストを輪読し、発表担当者のプレゼンの後に全員で内容について議論する。

テキストをあらかじめ発表担当者を決めて、毎週発表してもらうので、発表にあたり、パワーポイントなどの発表用資料の作成が求められる。また、オンラインによる授業が原則なので、自宅やオフィスなど大学内でない場所からのアクセスにはWi-Fiなど良好な速度を保てるツールや環境が必要となる。
本科目は、5年以上の実務経験を有する実務家教員による授業であり、全授業回数の50％以上がディスカッションなど双方向形式の授業によって運営されます。
