【Course Objectives】

Students will improve their skills in understanding quantitative data by learning the basics of quantitative social research in the civic sector.

【Course Contents】

In the field of the civic sector, discussions on philosophies and norms have played an important role in the past, but in recent years there is a clear trend that it has become desirable to show numerical evidence and use data to guide activities and evaluations.
However, such evidence-based principles have the risk of distorting reality unless the meaning of the data is properly understood.
In this course, the aim is that students acquire basic knowledge to collect, analyze and understand quantitative data from the perspective of positivist sociology.
Specifically, students will learn: how to make a questionnaire; what is reliable sampling; how is it possible to estimate the population from a small number of samples; how to understand the relationships between multiple variables; and what it means to say there is a statistical difference.
In the first half of the course, lectures will be given, and in the second half, students will learn the basics of quantitative social research through practical training in analysis of secondary data (cross-table analysis, multiple regression analysis, etc.) using statistical software ("jamovi").
