"Dark Tourism" is tourism associated with travel to sites of genocide,conflicts, large-scale human rights abuses,struggle and sadness in disaster-hit regions. We will position these phenomena in a wide range of contexts such as history, politics, society, ethics, and culture, deepen students' understanding of internal and external events, and contribute to the prevention.
The travel to sites associated with death, violence and misery, both in Japan and overseas, is not new. However, these phenomena were given the name "dark tourism" and have been the subject of academic research since the 1990s.
In this course, the concept of "dark tourism" is comprehensively studied, and we will ask who save (or destroy) the site as a tourist resource and for what purpose we should do so. What does it mean to consume and commercialize tragic death? We will try to understand these questions in social, ethical, cultural, historical, and political contexts. Then, each student will choose a "dark tourism site" and present it as a case study.

ジェノサイドや紛争、大規模な人権侵害、災害といった地域の苦しみ・悲しみの現場や跡地、遺跡・遺構をめぐる旅「ダークツーリズム」。この現象を、歴史、政治、社会、倫理、文化といった広範な文脈の中に位置づけ、内外の事象の理解を深め、事件の再発防止や予防に寄与する。
"Dark Tourism" is tourism associated with travel to sites of genocide,conflicts, large-scale human rights abuses,struggle and sadness in disaster-hit regions. 内外を問わず、人の「死」や暴力・惨劇にまつわる場所を旅する行為自体は新しいことではない。しかし、こうした現象に「ダークツーリズム」という名称が与えられ、学術研究の対象となったのは近年、1990年代のことである。
「ダークツーリズム」を副題とする本講座では、「ダークツーリズム」概念を体系的・包括的に学び、人類の負の遺産は誰が、どのような目的で保存し（あるいは破壊し）、観光資源とする（あるいは消し去る）のか。そこから私たちは何を、どのように学ぶのか。悲劇的な「死」を消費・商品化するとはどのようなことか。これらの問いを、社会的、倫理的、文化的、歴史的、政治的文脈の中に位置づけ、理解を試みる。そのうえで、受講生一人ひとりが、自ら「ダークツーリズム」の旅行者として、場所を選定し、事例研究として発表する。
