【Course Objectives】

We try to understand the significance of key issues of politics and diplomacy from a broad perspective on new topics. For example, in the field of diplomacy and security, current affairs related to the United States, China, Russia, Ukraine, Middle East, North Korea, South Korea, etc. will be taken up, and we will look into the background as well as future developments. While analyzing the tone of major newspapers, we will exchange views on the role of the media in our democratic society and the influential power of public opinion.

【Course Contents】

(1) We compare the reports and editorials of major newspapers that cover current meaningful events. Students will get to know the tendency of each newspaper, which is different not only among newspapers but also on different pages of the same newspaper. Let’s analyze and exchange opinions on the background of each tone.
(2) Briefing the basic knowledge is available to understand complicated policies such as foreign policy and security, in line with specific examples.
(3) There are various practical limitations and errors in the news. We will examine the reality of the press club system, off-the-record interviews, deadlines, costs, prohibited terms, and company management positions, etc. and consider examples of their influence on the news.
(4) We will explain the basic knowledge of newspaper production such as the facts of each site from data collection by reporters to the production of pages, the characteristics and issues of Japanese newspapers compared with foreign newspapers.
(5) The classes will emphasize discussion and individual presentations. Students will select themes respectively, summarize the issues, present them, and ask questions and give answers. We will have debates while respecting each other's beliefs and positions.
(6) At the end of the course, each student will write a short editorial and present it, and make it into a report. At that time, comments on writing skill will be available in light of specific examples.
(7) The lecturer or presenter will prepare and distribute files and copies of materials that would be necessary for discussion, such as editorials and articles.
(8) We may plan supplementary lectures in the fields related to this subject such as politics, security, etc.
