【Course Objectives】

Read the entire monograph Lenguas de fuego en la evangelización de México (Siglos XVI-XVIII) by Nancy Fariss on the subject of Christian evangelization in Latin America and issues of linguistic/cultural translation of Christian doctrines in Mexico. If no students can read Spanish, we use the English version Tongues of Fire: Language and Evangelization in Colonial Mexico (2018).

【Course Contents】

- To understand the structure of the issues surrounding Christian evangelization in the colonial Spanish Americas.
- To understand the history of the controversy over the linguistic/cultural translation of Christian concepts and doctrines.
