【Course Objectives】

In this seminar, students learn post-structuralist discourse analysis in the social sciences. In particular, the seminar focuses on Michel Foucault's method of discourse analysis and discusses its basic conceptual and analytical frameworks. The seminar also discusses a major social scientific work in the English speaking world which applies Foucault's method.

【Course Contents】

Part 1 discusses a trajectory of discourse analysis in the social scientific research and the position and contribution of poststructuralism. Part 2 discusses Michel Foucault's method of discourse analysis by focusing on his seminal books The Archaeology of Knowledge and The History of Sexuality Vol. 1 Will to Knowledge. Part 3 discusses an application of Foucault's method in social research through reading Arturo Escobar's Encountering Development: The Making and Unmaking of the Third World (Princeton University Press, the 2011 edition).
