After completing this course, students should be able to:
-explain the concepts and terminology associated with data science
-understand general data science methods
-choose the appropriate data science method given particular phenomena and data
-understand the limitations of data analysis stemming from assumptions embedded in the method, the finite resolution of the data, the sampling bias of the data, and so on.
-develop an approach for the analysis of various types of real data
-recognize the importance of empirical analysis based on real data
-understand the need to interpret results based on domain knowledge
This course will provide students with the foundations of data science. Students will learn the concepts, techniques, and tools needed to analyze various types of real-world data.

データサイエンスの用語や概念を理解すること、データサイエンスの手法を修得すること、現象やデータに応じて適切な分析手法を選択できるようになること、分析手法の仮定やデータの解像度・サンプルバイアスなどに起因したデータ分析の限界を理解すること、様々な実データ分析の手法を修得すること、実データに基づいて実証的に分析することの重要性を認識すること、領域知識を踏まえた上で結果を解釈する必要性を理解することを目標とする。

データサイエンスの基礎的手法を解説する。様々な実データを分析する際に必要となる概念や分析手法を学ぶ。
This course will provide students with the foundations of data science. Students will learn the concepts, techniques, and tools needed to analyze various types of real-world data.

本科目は、博士課程後期課程におけるコースワーク科目である。後期課程の受講者は、前期課程の受講者より高度な知識・スキルを身に付けることを目標としたうえで、成績評価基準についても、前期課程の受講者より高度な達成水準を要求する。
本科目は、全授業回数の50％以上がディスカッションなど双方向形式の授業によって運営される。
