【Course Objectives】

This course provides students with an opportunity to learn about bilingualism/multilingualism and its education based on academic research in the world. Through readings and discussion, students will develop understanding on how children and adults acquire more than one language and how bilingual and multilingual environments affect their language development. Students discuss the theories and data critically.

【Course Contents】

Students will learn how bilingual/multilingual children and adults grow up and how they acquire and learn their languages by reading the classic and recent bilingual studies in linguistics, psychology and education. The reading materials will be given either in English or Japanese and they will discuss in either language. Based on the readings covering the extensive areas of bilingualism and bilingual education research, students are required to give a presentation on the related area and write a short review paper as a final report.
