This is an advanced course of the Translator and Interpreter Training Program.
The objectives of this course are for students to:
1) become familiar with the basic concepts and component skills of simultaneous interpreting;
2) learn how to use the equipment for simultaneous interpreting;
3) develop the ability to simultaneously interpret between English and Japanese for speeches of 5 to 8 minutes; and
4) build up vocabulary on a range of topics.
The initial classes of this course will deal with the basic concepts of simultaneous interpreting, how to use booth interpreting equipment, and the foundational skills and techniques used in simultaneous interpreting. In the subsequent classes, students will be asked to interpret speeches on various topics, followed by time for constructive feedback and discussion with the whole class. This is not a theory-heavy course. The bulk of this course will be hands-on exercises where active participation will be crucial to successful learning.
We will use speeches on topics of a non-technical nature gradually building up in length and difficulty over the course of the semester to practice simultaneous interpreting between English and Japanese in both directions. Specific topics of speeches used in class may be subject to change but will be shared with students before the relevant class.
