This is an intermediate translation course of the Translator and Interpreter Training Program, which is designed to develop foundational competencies for translators and interpreters. The aims of this course for students are to (1) acquire practical knowledge and skills to produce Japanese subtitles for films and other audiovisual programs; and (2) learn social aspects of subtitles and gain a broad viewpoint of audiovisual translation.
This course introduces; (1) the basic theories of audiovisual translation; (2) the characteristics of subtitle translation, such as time and space constraints, multimodality and collaborative activities; (3) the skills to produce proper subtitles according to the context; (4) the effective use of a subtitling software; and (5) new trends in subtitle translation. Students work on assignments to translate part of a feature film using a subtitling software. In peer reviews and discussions, students are expected to explain the approach and strategies taken in the assignments.

To register for this course, students must have successfully completed Introduction to Translation.
This is an intermediate translation course of the Translator and Interpreter Training Program, which is designed to develop foundational competencies for translators and interpreters.
