【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to explore various language needs and current trends regarding interpreting in multicultural societies. Another objective of this course is to discuss the challenges and opportunities in community interpreting as a profession.

【Course Contents】

This course provides students with an overview of the specific and unique characteristics of interpreting in community and public services, with a specific focus on legal and healthcare settings. Additional topics include current issues on the practice and the training of community interpreters. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with practitioners or relevant stakeholders in the field and to discuss the challenges of the profession.
All students will be required to give a presentation on the language needs of a specific institution/community (e.g., educational institutions, immigration centers, ward offices, tourist information centers, etc.) based on their own research.
