This course represents an advanced component of the Interpreting/Translation Professional Training Program, integrating key concepts from Interpreting/Translation Studies Theories. It is designed to enhance students' translation skills and methodologies as they work on various types of texts and settings. This process will encourage students to critically analyze their translation choices and the effectiveness of different strategies in diverse contexts. Students will become familiar with practical work, understand professional ethics, and acquire an awareness of being a professional interpreter/trasnlator. They will also reflect the understanding gained through practice in their research. The ultimate aim of the course is to thoroughly prepare students for real-world interpreting and translation practice. In addition, Ph.D. students are expected to acquire the skills and competencies necessary for managing translation projects and leading linguists.
Students will gain insight into the objectives of the practical training, acquiring both the skills and the professional mindset necessary for their development. They will also learn about the service learning project "RiCoLaS" at Rikkyo University, along with various internships and other practical training opportunities. With this knowledge, students will engage in discussions to set their own training goals.
Throughout the practical training period, students are required to document their (1) objectives, (2) tasks undertaken to achieve these goals, and (3) the actual outcomes of their training. In the concluding session, each student will present an oral summary of their entire training experience and submit a comprehensive report detailing their training experience. In addition to the aforementioned requirements, Ph.D. students are mandated to compose an additional report. This supplementary report will demand a deeper level of analysis and reflection, aligning with the advanced academic standards expected at the doctoral level.
