Notes

【Course Objectives】

The objective of this course is to explore various language needs and current trends regarding translation and interpreting in multicultural societies. Another objective of this course is to discuss the challenges and opportunities in community interpreting as a profession.

【Course Contents】

This course provides students with an overview of the specific and unique characteristics of translation and interpreting in community and public services, with a specific focus on legal and healthcare settings. Additional topics include current issues on the training of community interpreters, along with the consequences of failing to provide timely access to quality interpreting in community settings. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with practitioners or relevant stakeholders in the field and discuss ethical challenges in professional practice. Toward the end of the semester, students will prepare and deliver a group presentation on the language needs of a specific institution/ community (local government offices, courts, etc.) based on desktop and field research.

【授業時間外(予習・復習等)の学修 / Study Required Outside of Class】

At Rikkyo University, students are required to spend 45 hours of study (including class time) per credit. Please prepare for classes and review the materials accordingly.
Students will be required to complete reading assignments before each class. During each class, students will be expected to participate in class discussions and present their findings to the rest of the class when instructed. Outside of class, students will also work either individually or in groups to prepare for translation and interpreting exercises that will be conducted in class. This will entail studying the communicative purpose of interpreted events in medical and legal settings, along with developing a glossary of key terms that will be used during the exercises.

Your class attendance and participation are critical components of this course. Even if circumstances require your absence, you will still be required to attend at least 2/3rds of the classes. If you do not attend this number of classes, you will receive a failing grade for the course.

To successfully complete this course, students will be required to have an advanced level of proficiency both in English and Japanese. International students who wish to take this course need to score at least J6 or above on their Rikkyo University Japanese Placement Test.
