【Course Objectives】

This is an intermediate course of the Conference Interpreting Program, which is designed to develop interpreter competencies identified by major international institutions. The objectives of the course are for students:

1) to solidify skills for consecutive interpreting with systematic note-taking for speeches on various topics
2) to become familiar with general principles and strategies for simultaneous interpreting
3) to acquire basic skills in remote interpreting
4) to hone skills for researching domain-specific topics
5) to become familiar with professional conduct and the code of ethics for interpreters.

By the end of the course, students should be able to accurately interpret up to 3 minutes of speech at a time on a technical topic in the consecutive mode and interpret up to 8 minutes of speech on a general topic in the simultaneous mode both in onsite and remote settings.

【Course Contents】

Students will be introduced to: professional conduct and the code of ethics for interpreters; preparation for interpreting speeches on domain-specific topics; and general principles and strategies for simultaneous interpreting. Students engage in exercises for consecutive interpreting between English and Japanese with systematic note-taking for technical speeches; and introductory exercises for simultaneous interpreting.
