・Understanding the dynamism between “belief” and “knowledge”
Why did Christianity, a tradition that places great emphasis on faith, give rise to the university as a place of scholarly inquiry grounded in questioning and doubt? This course explores this apparent paradox by tracing the development of Christian thought.
・Reconsidering the essence of the “liberal arts”
Students will examine how the concept of the liberal arts, which remains central to education today, was formed within the medieval university, and will learn about its intellectual and spiritual roots.
・Analyzing the history of “integration and distinction” in Western culture from multiple perspectives
By studying how Christianity developed through both the flexible incorporation of indigenous cultures and pagan philosophies and the strict differentiation from them, students will consider insights into multicultural coexistence that remain relevant to contemporary society.
・The Bible and the History of Interpretation: The Accumulation of Knowledge and Media Revolutions
This section provides an overview of how the Bible was transmitted through manuscript copying and print, and how knowledge was accumulated within churches and schools. It also examines how debates over “correct interpretation” developed into institutionalized spaces of learning, eventually giving rise to the university.
・The Encounter between Theology and Philosophy
How has theology incorporated philosophy, and how has it maintained a critical distance from it? By examining the logical structures of theological reasoning, this section invites students to reflect on the limits of human thought.
・From a Jewish Faith to a World Religion: Paradigm Shifts
This section surveys the major paradigm shifts in Christian thought that occurred as Christianity expanded from a Jewish religion into a world religion.

学びの精神科目
• 「信じる」と「知る」のダイナミズムを理解する
「聖書」がどのように写本・印刷され、教会や学校に知が蓄積されていったのかを概観する。また、「正しい解釈」を求める議論の場が、いかにして大学へと発展したのかを学ぶ。
• 「リベラルアーツ」の本質を捉え直す
神学は哲学をどのように取り入れ、また距離を取ってきたのか。神学の論理的思考を手がかりに、人間の思考の限界について考える。
• 西欧文化の「融合と識別」の歴史を多角的に分析する
キリスト教が土着文化や異教の哲学を柔軟に取り込み、あるいは厳格に区別しながら発展してきたプロセスを学び、現代社会にも通じる多文化共生の知恵を考察する。
