This lecture course aims to provide an overview of Western history from antiquity to the present and to cultivate the ability to analyze world history using the methods of historical research. Students will also learn how to explain the historical backgrounds of major contemporary issues by identifying connections across multiple periods and regions.
This course provides an overview of history from antiquity to the present, centered on Western history, while incorporating exchanges with and comparisons to other regions. In each session, students will work with excerpts from selected primary-source texts and core academic literature, and will be introduced to recent trends in historical research, enabling them to examine connections among events and key concepts. Emphasizing explanation over the memorization of facts, the course focuses on historical change in terms of causation and interaction, thereby providing a foundation for situating major contemporary issues within their historical contexts.

本授業は、西洋史を軸に古代から現代までの歴史的展開の骨格を把握し、世界史を歴史学の方法によって考察する力を養うことを目的とする。あわせて、現代の主要な課題について、その歴史的背景を複数の時代・領域の連関から説明できるようになることを目標とする。

本授業は、西洋史を中心に据えつつ、他地域との交流・比較を視野に入れ、古代から現代までを通史的に扱う。各回では、テーマに即した史料の抜粋、主要な先行研究、ならびに近年の研究動向を手がかりとして、出来事や概念の連関を検討する。事実の暗記にとどまらず、因果関係や相互作用を踏まえて歴史的展開を理解し、現代の主要な課題を歴史的背景から説明する基礎を形成する。
