【Course Objectives】

This course is designed to provide opportunities, through translation of a variety of texts, to develop an interest in language, raise awareness about multiple options that are available in translating a passage and deepen your insight into the pros and cons of each option. It also aims to bring you to a realization that there are limits to how closely a translated text can be made to resemble the original.

【Course Contents】

In order to achieve the goals delineated above, the course covers the following contents.
1. Introduction of major translation theories
2. Comparison of different Japanese translations of an English text.
3. Short exercises to acquire skills to produce translations that feel natural.
4. Sessions to discuss how to improve students' translations.
5. Presentations by students, as individuals or in groups depending on class size
