The objectives of the course are for students 1) to understand key events and phenomena in the history of translation and interpreting; 2) to recognize the importance of historical studies in understanding the practice of translation and interpreting in the present; and 3) to gain basic knowledge of approaches and methods in historical investigations into translation and interpreting.
Students will be introduced to the concept of translation and interpreting as mediating communication across languages and cultures; the relevance of historical studies to translation and interpreting practice in the world today; approaches and methods in studying translation and interpreting phenomena through history; and key events and phenomena in the history of translation and interpreting as a profession. Students are expected 1) to complete reading assignments and participate actively in class discussions; and 2) to conduct follow-up research on one of the topics covered in class or a topic of their choosing in the area of translation and interpreting history and produce an in-class presentation and a report at the end of the course.
