This course aims to shed light on a wide range of translation and interpreting practices from a historical perspective, and explore their diverse and multi-layered aspects as intercultural communications.
Translation and interpreting have been practiced from ancient times to the present in every possible place wherever different languages and cultures have encountered. Through this course, we will trace back the history of translation and interpreting practices all over the world, as well as in Japan, and examine diverse aspects of translation and interpreting as socio-cultural practices. The course provides an opportunity for students to discuss upcoming challenges and future directions of translation and interpreting from a perspective of intercultural communication.

本講義では、通訳・翻訳の実践を歴史的視座から考察することを通し、異文化接触、異文化コミュニケーションとしての通訳・翻訳の多層的実践の諸相と今後の課題について探求することを目指します。
This course aims to shed light on a wide range of translation and interpreting practices from a historical perspective, and explore their diverse and multi-layered aspects as intercultural communications.
通訳・翻訳は、古代より現代に至るまで異なる言語と文化の遭遇するあらゆる場所と空間で綿々と営まれてきた実践であり、その歩みは異文化接触の歴史であったともいえます。本講義では、世界および日本における通訳・翻訳の実践の足跡を、古代から近世、近代、現代までの歴史的流れのなかの様々な事象と絡めて辿り、文化的・社会的実践としての通訳・翻訳の諸相を多面的に考察するとともに、異文化コミュニケーションとしてのその課題と可能性について探求します。
Translation and interpreting have been practiced from ancient times to the present in every possible place wherever different languages and cultures have encountered.
