【Course Objectives】

The goal of this course is to understand typical topological solitons in relativistic field theories and to master appropriate analytical and numerical methods.

【Course Contents】

Topological solitons are important subjects not only in particle physics but also in cosmology, nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics. This is because the fundamental notion such as symmetry, spontaneous symmetry breaking, and topology are behind the topological solitons. The aim of this lecture is to introduce various topological solitons and explain how to deal with them mathematically and physically. The lecture starts with introducing basic but important ideas such as spontaneous symmetry breaking, order parameter space, topology, topological invariants, homotopy group. Then I will explain how to analyze both analytically and numerically domain walls and vortices as concrete examples. I also explain defect type and texture type solitons, and bosonic/fermionic zero modes localized on topological solitons, relation to supersymmetry, and BPS solitons. The lecture will cover extensions/applications to hybrid solitons, fractional solitons in BEC system, and chiral soliton lattice in high density QCD.
